Research Report Tutorials

Wednesday 5th October 2016
Tutorial with Krzysztof

Last year looked at Aesthetics and Anti-art
Process art - main theme of report proposal
Not really sure what to investigate in particular
Documentation of process art - pollock, yves Klein how they documented, how I would document
Yves Klein - body as painting tool
Pollock - dancing around paintings, listened to music. Photos that documented process more impact than paintings themselves - namuth

Look at documenting the process of painting - film and painting. Digital age.
Student a few years ago filmed her painting, finished product is abstract but film shows something much more figurative underneath
Mystere Picasso - film documenting Picasso drawing on the other side of an opaque sheet - Drawings gradually unfold, makes an image and keeps going, by the end has destroyed the original

Unfinished work - NY metropolitan 'Unfinished' exhibition

Process is a time based issue. Thing about painting and sculpture is that it is timeless - transcend time
Janine Antoni
Fluxus - nam June paik
Catherine Wood bigger splash book
Painting as performance - Amelia jones - body art performing as subject. Writes about pollock
Look at how painting is a trace of the body

Start making a list of examples to look at, then can start narrowing it down and anchoring a discussion

Look at link between art and time
3 different ideas: body, painting, process. Essay about where those three areas overlap

Approx 1000 words for into and conclusion so 4000 for main points
500+ words per example. Better to look at less in more detail. Examine examples compared to key terms.

Title - Painting as Process. Keep it simple for now. Can get more detailed after well into the drafting
Process and performance are key - how work is documented inherent part of the work

The work is within the documentation of the process. The final piece itself not necessarily most important thing

Still consider Aesthetics and beauty in art

It is evident in all art works that it took time to produce. There is a process to all art.

Museum stills sense of process. Renders artwork frozen in time
Most art is static and out of time

Contemporary example: maybe Jessica Warboys? British Art Show 8. Her work is arguably a public performance, in comparison to pollock (private) and Klein (by invite)

Structure:
Simple layout, complexity comes within writing
Pollock, Klein and Contemporary example
Historical order
Maybe use my own work as a 4th example - conclusion. Pull all threads together

Books:
Amelia Jones, Body Art/Performing the Subject
Documents of Contemporary Art - Time, Painting, Situation?, Studio
Time and Free Will, Matter and Memory - Philosophical considerations about such ideas

Pollock:
40's
Documentation - Namuth
Private Performance - artists struggle
Jack the Dripper - Life magazine (American Journal) 1949 - article, performance to promote his work
Book - Amelia Jones

Klein:
50-60's
Documentation of performance
Organised performance by invite - orchestra one note symphony
Performance for the Camera - Tate - look up catalogue
Books on documentation of the work

Contemporary example:
Have to be painting based
Process has to be inherent part of work
Performative/experimental
Maybe Jessica Warboys

Title needs editing - Title good, subtitle not good
800 words per chapter is maybe not enough to go into as much detail as I want to
Pollock is key part of the essay but maybe Richter/Polke not so relevant
Less things in more detail - get into complexity
Show examples - discuss case study. Looking at process, problems: might not matter which image you choose as all use the same process, also process is often invisible, as an artists it is key but viewer is often blissfully unaware of. Ways you can see handling of paint through dripping etc process becomes manifest. To what extent is process visible, to what extent is it documented. Pollock - lots of documentation - Hans Namuth, Rosenbeg - Action painting. 1940's
